Three things happened during Jesus' crucifixion:
Darkness covered the land from noon until three in the afternoon, symbolizing divine judgment.
The curtain separating the Holy of Holies from the rest of the Temple was torn in two, signifying full access to God for all humanity.
A powerful earthquake happened, followed by the opening of tombs, symbolizing victory over death, allowing eternal life through Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Jesus didn’t fight back against all who crucified Him. Instead, He prayed for their forgiveness during His suffering and injustice, that God would forgive them for their actions.
Luke 23:34
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of our Christian faith. Without the resurrection, the belief in God's saving grace through Jesus would be worthless. When Jesus rose from the dead, He confirmed His identity as the Son of God.
His work of atonement, redemption, reconciliation, and salvation were enabled to all humanity through His resurrection.
The resurrection was a literal, physical raising of Jesus’ body from the dead.
Jesus’s crucifixion took place before a special Sabbath day. The Jewish leaders didn’t want bodies hanging on crosses during Passover, so they made a request.
They asked Pilate to have the legs broken of the convicted men, to speed up their impending deaths. First, soldiers went to the other two criminals to carry out the task. When they approached Jesus, however, they noticed He was already dead.
Later, a disciple of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea, asked Pilate for Jesus’s body. Joseph had his own unused tomb he wanted to give Jesus. The gravesite was carved out of a rock.
After Pilate permitted Joseph to take the body, he wrapped Him in clean linen and placed Him in the tomb.
The Old and the New Testaments speak of Jesus being raised from death. Jesus testified of His resurrection before He died on the cross, and His disciples witnessed Him, alive after the resurrection.
Matthew 28:1-8
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.”
So, the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
Mark 16:6-14
“Don’t be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.
Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.
Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.
And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.
Later, Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen Him after He had risen."
Matthew 28:19-20
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Mark 16:17-19
"And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was taken up into heaven and He sat at the right hand of God."
